5 Cool Devil Stick Tricks

Teaching your kids devil stick tricks (or playing with them yourself!) is a fun and rewarding experience. Not only will they learn a new skill, but they’ll have fun while doing it. And the cool thing is, there are some really easy tricks they can start with.

1. Standard Idle

Hold your right-hand stick and left-hand stick in each hand with your elbows tucked to your sides, your arms bent at a 90-degree angle, and your sticks pointing straight out in front of you. Place the devil stick diagonally between the two so it is below your right-hand stick and on top of your left-hand stick (or vice versa). Sway the devil stick back and forth between your right-hand stick and left-hand stick by moving your hands up and down in a constant, rhythmic motion.

2. Flip Idle

Start by doing the standard idle. When ready, position your right and left-hand sticks at the top part of the devil stick. Alternate the devil stick between your right-hand stick and left-hand stick while forcing it downward into a half spin on either side.

3. Airplane Spin

Start by doing the standard idle. When ready, transition the devil stick to either your right-hand stick or left-hand stick, and spin it consistently on the chosen stick (it should look like an airplane propeller). To keep the devil stick spinning on either side, aim to hold your hand stick at the center of the devil stick. Your moving arm should make a scooping motion as you spin it either clockwise or counterclockwise.

4. Top Only Idle

Hold your right-hand stick and left-hand stick in each hand with your elbows tucked to your sides, your arms bent at a 90-degree angle, and your sticks pointing straight out in front of you. Place the devil stick so that it rests on the inside of both hand sticks. Sway that devil stick back and forth between your right-hand stick and left-hand stick by moving your hands up and down in a constant, rhythmic motion.

5. Helicopter

Start by doing the top only idle. When ready, transition the devil stick to either your right-hand stick or left-hand stick while pushing the devil stick outward, so that it lays flat on the support stick and spins. After the devil stick spins, sway it back to the other hand stick before doing the spin motion again.

Tips for Mastering These Cool Devil Stick Tricks

Control and consistency are key when it comes to performing devil stick tricks. The goal is not to do the tricks as fast as possible but as consistently as possible. The more difficult the trick, the more important it is to find a rhythm and move the stick in a constant motion. By mastering the standard idle first, it will be much easier to learn more complicated moves. Ready to get your hands on some devil sticks and try these fun tricks?
